Touching the Soul through the Power of Song

If you believe that the soul speaks through the voice, then you’ll be drawn to the warmth, lusciousness, and raw intensity of Melissa Chan d’Estrella’s performances.  Storyteller by nature, Melissa sings because her innate connection with characters, stories, and words compels her to share the deep humanity behind them with others so they can find joy, comfort, and inspiration in that moment and beyond.

Biography

Melissa Chan is a recent transplant to Singapore who built her career in concert and opera performances in the New York area and abroad. Melissa began her career as a soprano, performing leading roles in Le Nozze di Figaro, La Traviata, Dialogues des Carmelites, and Alcina.  In 2010, Melissa made her debut as a mezzo-soprano singing Wellgunde with New York Opera Forum, Mercèdes with New York Lyric Opera Theatre, and a solo recital presented by the YMS Arts Centre at Esplanade Recital Hall in Singapore.  Since then, Melissa has performed Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana) and created the roles of Rachaele & Tiziana in two different New York City productions of Christof Bergman’s Piazza Navona by Accadia Opera and Opera Manhattan.  2014 saw Melissa venturing into Baroque music with Venice Opera Project’s production of Cavalli’s "Gli Amori d'Apollo e Dafne", followed by a sold-out 3-night run of her solo cabaret show “New York State of Mind” at Theatre Lounge Café in Kuala Lumpur.  Her 2016 performances in Singapore included Flamenco Sin Fronteras’ widely acclaimed Misa Flamenca and ensemble performances in Opera Viva’s concert series - Opera Mixer, for which she was also Producer.  Melissa is no stranger to Singapore – she spent her secondary school years as a regular fixture in Singapore Youth Choir performances and in principle roles with Tanjong Katong Girls’ School’s annual musical productions (Carousel, Guys & Dolls, and Kismet) at Victoria Theatre.  Melissa is thrilled to be performing actively in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region once again. Melissa studies with New York-based Valerie Sorel.
